I am terrible at keeping up with blogs, but I also loathe Blackboard. Last summer I just decided to create my own website for hosting classes. On there, I put everything needed in a very simple interface. I even got rid of Blackboard for a semester by using Snapgrades.net. The grade book is far superior although it costs $25 per semester if you want your students to be able to check their grades online. Otherwise it is free. I am always on the lookout for grade book alternatives. While the original site took time to write, I reuse it for every course I teach. It saves me a lot of time and frustration that I am sure would be expended upon Blackboard.
